My colleague at IBM, Paul Brown, has written a book on Object-Relational Database Development that you may find useful. Paul contributes here from time-to-time and has also worked with customers that have used O-R and can better explain their reasons for doing so.

I have not come across many comparisons of OO and OR. There is a nice (old, but still useful) paper that compares OO and R:
