This newsgroup is by no means representative for the DB world. The people that are representative usually don't have the time to hang around here. But as always there are a few exceptions, of course.
I don't know how things are on the implementation side but as a theoretical subject spatial databases have cooled down quite a bit. Most researchers that I know and worked on this have moved to another subject on by now. You can verify this yourself by looking at the years of the articles you will find on the subject.
