performance advice

i am implementing an application using a corporate "party" model. data access in some cases involves a great number of tables and there are performance issues. does anyone have any pointers to strategies one can employ (e.g.viewstrategies, useraccesslayers) that i could look at to make it easier to code against whilst improving performance.
