There are not very much good practical options at this moment. Demanding a better standard to the industry and wait is not very practical at short time.

An option is knowing what is wrong in SQL and using the best workarounds you can find.

Another may be using products like Alphora's Dataphor. www.alphora.com

Another is implementing the ideas of Darwen and Date's Third Manifesto by yourself, but it may be a lot expensive and time consuming.
