you may also wish to consider the heirarchical data format, HDF5 developed at NCSA, This is designed for storing multidimensional scientific data. It has no special support for querying as in a relation db but it does support slicing and dicing and other techniques for accessing a part of your dataset.

We are trying using to use hdf5 to store the numeric data with a data model developed in a subset of the EXPRESS (iso 10303:11) language. The data model identifies what the data is and the relationship between the various numeric datasets.
