Bind and Substitution Variables

I am prertty much confused with Bind and Substitution Variables.



Can anyone help with a clear meaning as to when I use it?
For Instance, in the reports that I am modifying now,, it has many cases of
bind and substitution variables.



What exactly are those used for and "where"
