Normalisation [newbie]

Hi all, as part of my study we are starting to learn about normalisation and I'm really having difficulties in understanding parts of it.
For example, understanding functional dependence and transitive dependence when trying to bring a database to 3NF. Can anyone please briefly explain what these terms actually mean in relation to the data to be normalised? or direct me to a website that can explain this kind of stuff.
