Which route??

Greetings,

We have an incredibly large amount of data to sort & manipulate, far more than off the shelf stuff can do. I'm db illiterate but would like to get a feel for some options.

1. Is there a large db program that is clearly better & faster at manipulating huge amounts of data?
2. If this data were accessable to the web, which OS would it run on, fastest, most reliable?
3. Speed and accuracy of manipulating this data on the fly?
