I have 9i which I mess about with on a machine with 256MB of RAM. Not a problem - though, again, I wouldn't use 256 for a "working" db.

Firebird will work with 32MB of RAM, and you won't even notice the load it places on the "server".

Why, but oh why, do you have to go with 98?

When asking database related questions, please give other posters 
some clues, like operating system, version of db being used and DDL.
The exact text and/or number of error messages is useful (!= "it didn't work!").
