MySql exists in the market place and has many customers,
other Opensource products :- Apache, PHP, Linux, OpenOffice
I have been using Suse Linux 8.2 for over a year it cost me GBP40.
I have downloaded the latest version (Suse 9.0) for free, from which I
am sending this posting.
The interesting thing is I am now using Oracle (after 13 years of
Ingres) and using MySql at home. I agree that MySql is not as feature
rich as Oracle but
it still does its job as a database, and with version 5 just released
(for free) it promises even more.
You are correct free lunches do not exist these days, which why
companies are cutting costs in their IT departments 1) by moving jobs
to India and 2) by using OpenSource products.
