Oracle partitioning option expensive - any alternatives ??

Dear Oracle gurus,
One of our application needs a VLDB and writes voluminous data and we
chose oracle 8i entreprise edition with paritioning option. But this
has boosted the cost of the app so much that i am wondering if there
is any alternative by which we can get same performance and benefits
what enterprise/partitioning would give with using standard edition
itself. Your help and ideas are greatly appreciated.
