What version. Prior to 9 or if no spfile in use

create init_newsid.ora file
set Oracle environment
export $ORACLE_SID=newsid [Korn shell version] unset TWO_TASK [if in use]
connect in svrmgrl or sqlplus /nolog
startup

This is the simple case; you might have to create some files or links depending on your directory naming pattern/rules
