Extproc usage with mutiple Oracle Homes (9.2 and 8.1.7)

Hi All
We are currently trying to get two databases (one at 8.1.7 and t'other at 9.2.0) to be able to call out to Pro*C.
So far we have only been able to get one to be able to work, the other one will give a 'lost RPC connection' error meainging usage is mutually exclusive.
First question : is it ACTUALLY possible to have ONE extproc process handling requests from multiple flavours of Oracle ? (we've tried the EXTPROC_DLLS=ANY trick)
Two : if so, how?
FYI We are running 9.2.0.2 EE and 8.1.7.0.0 EE on RedHat 7.2
