data not saved after exiting SQL*Plus

Hi,

I am working on Oracle 8i Personal edition on Win 98. I inserted some rows in a table and quit out of SQL*PLus. The data was not saved. Do I have to explicitly issue a commit after each insert ? I have worked on prior versions or Oracle and did not have this problem. Is this version different or is there some option in SQL*Plus that I need to set.
