client does not connect to new DB

Hi,

I have recently reinstalled Oracle 8.1.6 on a Win2k machine. I already had a client installed on a Win98 machine. Now when I try to connect to the server through this client, the operation times out.
I have installed Oracle client on a new machine also and everything works quite normally.
I have checked the contents of tnsnames.ora of both the systems and they are same.
Please suggest.
