I don't know that anyone would want to write a white paper just to attempt to convince people that "mixing table and index on the same device is no worse than separating them". What's the point? In fact, it's quite easy to see that mixing them up is no better than separating them assuming the same stripe degree.

Ask your colleague to visit this forum and read what people say about how disks work in what configuration, and in what circumstances you get or don't get performance benefit. That and a little thinking, he will probably come to his own conclusion. Don't think this stuff is that hard to understand. It will take some basic knowledge and reasonable common sense, but not much more than that.
