Ted,

     First of all you do not need sqlnet to get oracle8 running. You can use Net8. So try installing oracle without selecting SQL*Net.

     About finding and removing the service, you can open control panel, services, look for the specified service, like oracle sql*net or whatever. if you find it running, stop it. Open registry Editor, goto hkey_local_machine\system\controlset001\enum\root\ look for the service you want to delete. The service will be prefixed with Legacy. Like, legacy_sqlnet or whatever... You might need to run the regedt32.exe to change permissions for this service, and you can delete the service.
