Or he meant varchar (without the 2)...
There have been discussions about the use of varchar2 vs. char related to performance, row-chaining/migration, etc. Besides that, the general consensus is to use varchar2, not char, although char is still supported (and probably will be for some time: as Sybrand states, there's no desupport notice, and 'connect internal' desupport notice was issued, what - 3 years ago? And it still exists)
And char is not varchar2!
