Is there ODBCTest or a similar tool available for Oracle on Solaris 8?

We are running Solaris 8/Oracle 8.1.7. We are trying to do a MapQuest install and are having some trouble...it gives us an ODBC S1000 error. I would like to test just the ODBC connectivity somehow. I've been looking around the newsgroups and have seen several mentions of ODBCTest, but I can't seem to find one for the platform I'm on--this utility seems more for the Windows environment. Is there a straightforward way to test ODBC with Oracle on a unix platform? I need something that will throw a little more descriptive message than "S1000".
