compiling OCI - C programs on UNIX?

Good Morning! After trying for three days to compile a program on our Red Hat 6.2 system running Oracle 8i.. I am stumped. Any help? I have been using "make -f demo_rdbms.mk myfile" and that doesn't seem to work. What else can I do? Thanks in advance!
