8.1.7 on Win2k - EOF on communication channel

Hi,
I've noticed some strange behaviour with an 8.1.7 instance I have installed on my Win2k machine. When I boot the machine and start my database with my network cable connected to the machine, I get end of file on communication channel errors when I try to login to the database. If I boot the machine and start my database without my network cable plugged in, I can login to the database fine. If I then plug the network cable in, without rebooting or logging out of windows or anything, everything is still ok. Any ideas on why the network interaction appears to be screwing things up?
