PL/SQL update record counts

Is there a simple way of getting the count of records updated via an update statement? Is there a SQL Message that can be used? I would prefer to not have to first select the count of the records to be affected, then issue the update. Also would prefer not to create a on-update trigger, as it is not necessary to have execute under normal conditions.
