Question about (+) in WHERE clause

Hi,

I try to debug a SQL statement of the form:

SELECT E.FIRST_NAME, A.STATE

FROM      EMPLOYEES E, ADDRESS A
WHERE     E.LAST_NAME LIKE 'j%'
AND       E.ADDRESS_ID (+) =A.ADDRESS_ID

I am not really sure what this (+) stands for. Do you know any Oracle documentation explaining the use of this symbol?
