9i Database Configuration Assistant hangs on Solaris 8

I'm trying to install Oracle 9i on an UltraSparc with Solaris 8. The install runs fine except for "dbca" which hangs on the "creating and starting oracle instance" step with the progress bar stuck at 50%. I can do a software only install successfully but if I run "dbca" to create a database it hangs at the same location every time.
Any ideas?
