ora-01034 Oracle not available

I am getting the following error while trying to initialize the DB after running the 8.17 install frim CD-Rom. I am not experienced with Oracle but need to have it loaded in order to run a storage management package.
Could anyone give me a pointer as to what I may have missed
Solaris 8
Oracle 8.1.7
This message appears during the install after all files are copied over and the install program is trying to initialize the database. I'd appreciate any ideas on where to start looking for answers. Thanks Received on Tue Oct 30 2001 - 23:49:22 CET
