JFS is *journaled*, which means there is a kind of redolog mechanism on disk level. IMO RAW is way more independable than JFS, and JFS is pretty good to manage. Also, the standard tools on AIX are not capable of backing up RAW volumes, you need to buy extra software for that. Evidently, in both cases, you still should run your database in archivelog.
