how do i send e-mail from an SQL*Plus script or PL/SQL procedure?

i'd like to have some SQL*Plus scripts

e-mail success or failure at the end.

i'd also like to do the same with PL/SQL routines.

i'm running Oracle 8i under UNIX.

existing routines have a UNIX shell script that will perform this task.

but we may be required to omit the shell scripts and work only with SQL*Plus script and PL/SQL stored procedures.

again, i'd like to e-mail a success or failure message from SQL*Plus or PL/SQL.
