ORA-12500

I had an instance of 8i on a WinNT workstation. For a client I had to install the 8.0.4 client. After I finished that project I reinstalled the 8.1.7. client. Ever since I performed the reinstall I have been receiving ORA-12500: TNS:listener failed to start a dedicated server process. Could someone please suggest common reasons for this error.
