Are u sure the doc file is not a Word 2000 file or something else.. ? If it is working normally with other files, then the problem lies with the file,or with it's version.. also are u sure it is a .doc ? trying renaming it to .xls and see if it has not been renamed to .doc or something ... it happens you know :-)

It cannot be the binary/ascii problem.
