I run Oracle 7 and IDS 2000 9.2 on a SCO machine at home and when both are fired up it the response times are reasonable. AIX/RISC will deal with it considerably quicker. My machine is just a PC 600MHZ/128MB RAM. Is this a development machine ? The pitfalls are all of the points you mention. If this is a production machine, you should be really looking at RAID 0/1 128MB cache. Obviously the more disks across the stripe the better. The key is really in the tuning of the OS and DB's.
