A blank screen means that Explorer is not running. Explorer includes the start button, the toolbar that it resides on, and all of your desktop icons. It doesn't necessarily mean that your OS has died - just explorer.

a little trick, try renaming explorer.exe to somthing, just to save it, then copy winfile.exe to explorer.exe. that should start up file manager instead of explorer when your computer comes up, and maybe you can navigate around to see what is going on. Possibly a bad registry entry - I don't know.
