no Umlaute in SQL*Plus

Hi
SQL*Plus isn't showing the Umlaute (ä, ö, ü, etc) on my computer (NT4.0 SP5, english OS). I got the tip about bad nls_language in the registry. So I changed the entry in hkey_local_machine\software\oracle\home0\nls_lang to nls_lang_old but the problem remains.
the value in nls_lang was/is "FRENCH_FRANCE.WE8ISO8859P1"
Does somebody know what I have to do?
