I think you have to add these lines too: ORACLE_BASE=/usr01/u01/oracle
ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/product/8.1.6
PATH=$PATH;$ORACLE_HOME/bin (; instead of /) export ORACLE_BASE
export ORACLE_HOME
export PATH
