Organizing alert_log

Will Oracle create a new alert_log if I move the alert_log to another file? What I want to do is setup a cron'd script that will move the alert_log daily. The new file will be named based on date. This way, it will be easier for me to monitor the alert log and keep organized backups. What do you guys recommend for such a task?
