The place to start is with your business specs:

  • How many users, doing what, how often?
  • How much data will be in the database?
  • How fast will it be growing?
  • What are your data retention requirements?
  • What kind of up time/availability is required? Desired?
  • What kind of batch tasks will run?
  • Where does new data come from. Users, other systems, etc...
  • How will reporting be done?
  • What is you DR and availability requirements?
  • What else do you want this box to do?
  • How much development do you plan on doing over what period of time?
  • Make sure you include money for a test environment. How much does this need to resemble production?

Take this info and give it to a DBA for analysis and feedback. Take this number and multiply by 1.5 :-) ok.... ignore that last part.

Windows 2k is like anything else. Good points and bad. Selecting the right or best OS is another aspect of your business requirements compared to your available onsite expertise. ie - Unix may not be right if everyone there only knows Windows. Any OS (or DB) set up badly will function badly.

Good Luck.....
