How to get started?

I am trying to learn Oracle the the 8i for Dummies book. So I loaded 8i
for Windows 98, standard configuration, and tried to get started. It
looks like the first thing is to log on to SQL. So I tried, with the
following results -
Do I have to do something first, like start databases or initialize
instances? The learning curve is awfully steep just to start to learn.
