DBMS vs ISAM

I've got an incoming stream of records that needs to be "logged" and then later retrieved.
It's numeric data having about 10 fields, and I would form indexes on about 3 fields. While the data is arriving I can assume, generally, that no other user will be accessing it.

We will be using "basic" Pentium 800 MHz based systems. What kind of record insert rate can I expect?

How much more efficiency would I gain by using a straight ISAM file for this data?

TIA.
