odbc very slow at start

Hi all,
I'm using microsoft access 97 with an oracle 8 backend and odbc. The first connection any client makes through odbc takes about 30 seconds. Any further connections are no problem. However, after having access in the background for quite some time (hours), it needs to "reconnect" and takes 30 seconds again. Is this some kind of configurable timeout?
