Well it depends on all what you will be doing with your database. OLTP "based stuff" Informix, no doubt, fastest in the market at oltp with little or no headaches.

Warehousing data of 1 terabyte or more, Teradata, period. Easy to manage, DBA's dream. "Stuff's not running fast, Add more Nodes and more disk". The only drawback is that it is very expensive.
