Embarcadero Technologies is pleased to announce the completed development and implementation of XPlan 1.3, a freeware tool for Oracle DBA's and PL/SQL developers. It is now available and can be downloaded at no cost from www.dbartisan.com/tuning/xplan.exe. Please note that XPlan does not come with a support system as it is a freeware program.

The new tool brings a variety of benefits to users including the ability to both monitor and chart database disk space consumption over time as well as the ability to locate and tune offensive SQL statements using a variety of convenient methods. For a more complete description, please visit http://www.embarcadero.com/sqltuning.htm

SQL TUNING Xplan is easily installed onto user's PC's and allows effortless connection to their database. XPlan provides two SQL tuning interfaces; users with DBA privileges are able to scan the SGA SQL cache to quickly locate the offensive SQL statements. All it takes is a double click on the offensive statement and users can view the explain plans. Another benefit allows users to launch the SQL statement tuning window where they can tune the SQL statements by either typing, pasting from the clipboard, or loading from text files. XPlan's improvement in the ease of use of Oracle SQL code is a great benefit to users of all levels.

DATABASE GROWTH MONITORING XPlan also has useful attributes regarding database growth monitoring. DBA' s can have XPlan create a repository on their server, which contains up to a year's worth of disk space consumption data. Disk space growth can be queried over time by tablespace, by largest tables, and by largest indexes. However, users should be aware that the largest tables and indexes are only able to collect data for objects that have already been analyzed or have statistics present. XPlan can also create and schedule Oracle jobs to capture each day's disk space. In order to access the Oracle jobs, users need the Oracle initialization parameter of "job_queue_processes" to be set to at least one of the Oracle jobs.

THE FUTURE FOR XPLAN 1.3
There will be more features added to XPlan over time. For instance, XPlan should soon be able to provide disk space growth projections based on the most recent growth trends. To be on the edge of this new technology, return often to www.Embarcadero.com to check on XPlan's version updates. Received on Fri Oct 29 1999 - 00:00:00 CEST
