Swap space on the client is not the issue -- occurs for all clients.
Tried reindexing the table -- didn't help.
The key is as follows:
NUMBER(38) [actually an integer ID number]
VARCHAR2(20)
NUMBER [actually a small integer, or zero]
So it doesn't seem that it could be an inexact value.
The problem continues to stump and confound...
