Hi Richard,

We are not a large company (we have 5,000 employees), but we are using Oracle on Linux as a test bed. When we want to test stuff that we fear is likely to crash the box or hang the database we do it on Oracle 8.0.5 on Linux. If it works we will then do further testing on an RS6000 development box or, on days when we feel brave, move it directly onto our RS6000 production systems.

We are not using Oracle on Linux for production work AT THIS TIME. For business reasons I suspect that it will be a very long time before we seriously consider Oracle on Linux for production work -- not because we distrust it, but because we like the scalability of the RS6000 systems. (Yes, I know how well Linux scales -- but not out of the box with 7 by 24 support from an established vendor.)

One possible exception is based on the fact that we are a computer services organization. This would consist of setting up dedicated Oracle on Linux systems for specific customers. The customers would then be able to submit their data and processing specs, we would do the processing, and then we would store the output on the Linux system where the customer could access their data using a browser. (Substitute department for customer and I think I have described a viable scenario for most medium sized and large organizations).
