You mean you have installed Oracle Server on an HP and you don't have the $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbstart and $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbshut scripts?

The 'su' part in Neil's answer should be the same on all unices, or else you do 'man su' on your system and see what you have to do to run a command as another user.

BTW, the location of the oratab file is specified in the dbstart and dbshut scripts (and perhaps in a lot of other places). The file should be owned by the oracle user, and it should have been created during the installation of the server. So, rtfm once again.
