What's an node?

I'm trying to set up Enterprise manager on NT 4. Help talks alot about nodes and I can see it's defined around tnsnames.ora but what's a node exactly?
NT server name?
world?
service name?
database name?
I must be asking a RTFM but I can't find a description or example of what is a node in it.
