Stale means that Oracle has received at least on file error when writing to the file. Since redo logs should be multiplexed, this should not cause a problem. As soon as the stale redo log again becomes part of the active group, this will be fixed. However if a redo log receives 4 i/o errors, Oracle will mark it as invalid and will not try to write to it again.

It will have to be dropped and recreated.
