Thanks. I finally got Developer 2000 connected with my loacl Oracle 8 database by starting the listener. This brings up another problem.

I could only connect to my local Oracle 8 database if I am physically connected to a network It appears that the listener uses the TCP protocol to locate the oracle database which is on the same machine as Developer 2000. When I disconnect from the network (I am using a Thinkpad) the listener is unable to locate the database and thus I am unable to connect.

SQL Plus 8.0 seems to recognize the local database without the listener running or a TNSNAMEs file. How do I configure SQL PLUS 3.3 and Developer 2000 to do the same ?
