Select ? from dual...bring back ORACLE database date format...

What's the command I use ("SELECT ? from dual") to bring back the date format (American, British, etc) for an Oracle database. Do I bring back SYSDATE and parse it, or is there a better way to check that the Database has been correctly configured for British use.
