Look at Oracle 8 and the *partitioning option* - NB. it is an additional
*costed* option, you don't get it for free with Oracle 8.
One of our clean-ups was also taking 6-7 *hours*. After partitioning, the
clean-up is down to a few *seconds*. I also tend to use stored procedures
which create the new partitions dynamically for each new months worth of
data being added.
