Delete Database file - Oracle won't start.

Hi all,
(Oracle 7.3.3 Unix)
A database file has been deleted, and now oracle does no longer want
to start.. I have these messages:
ORA-01157: cannot identify data file 23 - file not found ORA-01110: data file 23: '/bmd/db/bmd_data.dbf'
I did startup the DB in nomount in order to try
alter database drop datafile '/bmd/db/bmd_data.dbf'
or
alter database datafile '/bmd/db/bmd_data.dbf' drop
It does not work...............(wrong command). I can't find my Oracle Documentation CD-Rom.......so I don't know what to do now...
