What can cause a Names Server to Hang?

Running Oracle 7, names server up.

Today we found it apparently hung. "namesctl status" did nothing. We did a shutdown and a restart, it came back ok.

The log files don't seem to explain what happened, but that's partly because we're not sure what its saying.

So, what can cause a hung names server? It had been running just fine, then zombie ville.
